Intelligent Immersive Environments for Elderly Care: Integrating XR, Robotics, and AI Technologies

Abstract

This paper proposes the concept of an Intelligent Immersive Environment (IIE), an innovative eldercare framework integrating Extended Reality (XR), robotics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The proposed IIE aims to address critical eldercare challenges such as mobility impairments, cognitive decline, and social isolation by providing adaptive, personalized care solutions. XR technologies are envisioned to deliver immersive therapeutic sessions and cognitive training, robotics to offer physical support and companionship, and AI, including Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), to dynamically personalize interactions based on user performance and emotional states. Emphasizing accessibility and inclusion, multimodal interfaces (voice, gesture, eye tracking) are proposed to accommodate diverse user needs. The framework outlines potential deployment pathways in residential care, assisted living facilities, and private homes, aiming to enhance quality of life, reduce caregiver burdens, and foster independence among elderly populations through holistic, technology-driven care solutions.
