Abstract

Metaverse includes a vast collection of virtual environments and provides a unique opportunity for collaborative learning. Architectural design education is an area where research should be intensified by following leading technologies and methods to ensure sustainability. This study explores the potential of implementing a metaverse-based platform for architectural design studios and evaluates its impact on education. The platform, developed within this study, provides an interactive and collaborative metaverse-based design environment for the virtual design studio. The research emphasizes the role of the metaverse in collaborative design learning and improving human–computer interaction (HCI). Collaborative Learning Assessment (CLA) developed by Muñoz-Carril et al. (Comput Educ 174, 2021) is conducted in a collaborative studio environment with 38 students from different universities to evaluate this approach. The study’s main contribution is to propose a metaverse-based collaborative virtual model for the early architectural design phases in the studio environment that can be applied later in the metaverse environments.
