From Nature Sounds to Automatic Logouts: Teleworking in Metaverses and Employee Well-Being

Abstract

This study explores the potential of immersive remote working in metaverses to enhance employee well-being, within the broader context of New Ways of Working (NWW). Drawing on a phenomenological approach, it examines the lived experiences of employees in a French SME during trials of five different metaverse platforms. The findings reveal that while immersive environments can foster positive emotions and a sense of presence, they also raise challenges related to usability, technical performance, and platform design. The study identifies four key themes: Preparing for Remote Working in a Metaverse, Metaverse Environment Design, Metaverse as a Burden, and Features. It confirms that environmental aesthetics, avatars, and interaction tools matter, but they are not sufficient alone to ensure employee well-being. This research contributes to underexplored areas of virtual work and metaverse use, offering practical insights for organisations seeking to implement immersive telework. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.
