Abstract

Effective communication is vital and choosing the wrong communication software can lead to technical issues, incompatibility, and communication breakdowns. This paper introduces the CoCoTeS model, a heuristic framework designed to analyze and compare the relative fit of two technologies for a given scenario. Drawing on concepts from virtual reality and computer-mediated communication theories, CoCoTeS provides a clear structure for evaluation, even those with asymmetric user configurations. It separates technological and personal aspects, which allows training and experience of the users to be accounted for. By structuring the interaction of user attributes and system capabilities, the CoCoTeS model enables a more informed selection of communication software. We aim to improve the technology selection for collaboration, problem-solving, and decision-making and offer a robust foundation for future empirical research.
