Examining the Role of Export Diversification in Fostering Sustainability: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

This chapter conducts a bibliometric analysis of the relationship between export diversification and the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental. Using data from the Scopus database, it examines 278 publications from 1990 to 2025 to identify trends, influential contributors, thematic clusters, and research gaps. Unlike earlier reviews that addressed individual dimensions or broader concepts such as economic complexity, this study offers an integrated perspective within the sustainability framework. The findings reveal a sharp increase in publications after 2016, led by Chinese institutions, followed by the United States and Turkey. Three main research themes emerge: the link between export diversification and economic development, its relationship with energy use, and its impact on environmental quality. Results point to positive effects on economic growth, mixed evidence on environmental outcomes, and limited attention to social dimensions, highlighting the need for future research on related vs. unrelated diversification, sector-specific environmental impacts, and social outcomes such as poverty reduction and human capital development.
