Digitalization of Georgia’s Agro-Food Industry: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Development

Abstract

The article substantiates the importance of digitalization in the development of Georgia’s agro-food industry and in the process of achievement of food security goals. Digitalization is evaluated as the basis of industry modernization and progress. By applying bibliometric analysis the paper identifies the main directions of research focus, evaluates the evolutionary development of the research process, identifies research clusters by country and authors of dominant publications, different opinions of scientists about digitization concepts are evaluated. The paper justifies that digitalization creates new prospects for productivity in the development of the agro-food industry. With the use of modern digital technologies, it is possible to achieve the sustainability of agro-food industry and increase productivity. The work is based on various theoretical-methodological tools of research, in particular, bibliometric research has been conducted. Analysis, synthesis, comparison, factorial and other methods have been used. In order to identify the digitalization barriers in Georgia’s agro-food industry, a quantitative study was conducted through the Google Form online questionnaire. By surveying the respondents, the goals of using digital technologies are identified, the most used applications and services to achieve the goals are identified. Also, the level of access to the Internet, barriers to the introduction of digital technologies, opportunities for the introduction of digital technologies in the industry, benefits from digitization and others are determined. According to the evaluation of the producers, the possibilities of introducing digital technologies in the agro-food industry have been identified: the necessity of systematic organization of educational trainings, training courses and seminars, increasing access to digital technologies and financial resources, development of digital infrastructure, etc. The paper provides conclusions on the peculiarities and existing barriers of digitalization in the agro-food industry, offers recommendations on the possibilities of digitalization development.
