Linguistic-Cultural Information as a Means of Promoting Tolerant Cross-Cultural Communication for Sustainable Development

This article studies the role of linguistic-cultural information in developing the competence of effective cross-cultural communication, without which the sustainable development of the world community is impossible. Linguistic-cultural information is considered as a linguistic way of representing extralinguistic knowledge about the culture of the people and as a means of creating tolerance in cross-cultural communication. The aim of this research is to identify language units (linguistic culturemes) in Russian-language film texts that transmit information about the culture of native speakers and are a source of knowledge about this foreign culture, as well as the features and methods of their transmission when translating film texts from Russian into English. The source of the study's material is the originals and translations of film texts of popular Russian-language films, from which contexts were selected, including language units transmitting information related to the culture of the Russian-speaking society of a specific historical period. The authors of the article conclude that the cultural information in the studied contexts is transmitted mainly through such linguistic phenomena as realities, national-specific phraseological units, precedent phenomena and background vocabulary. It is noted that the transfer of data to the linguistic culture in the process of translating the film text into another language occurs through various translation transformations and often leads to a loss of national-cultural color. Nevertheless, original versions of film texts are a valuable source of information about national cultures and a means of developing the competencies which are necessary for successful cross-cultural communication for sustainable development.
