Abstract

The increasing speed to respond to trade demand and the complexity of supply chains operations often lead to inefficiencies in seaports. One of the most critical issues is truck congestion. This has been addressed in the literature from different perspectives. A common proposed approach to reduce congestion in ports is implementing a Truck Appointment System (TAS), a tool aiming at coordinating the truck arrival scheduling and operations with the cargo handling in port terminals. This paper aims at analysing potential implementation strategies to develop an efficient TAS model, based on a twofold perspective, combining literature review findings and logistic stakeholders’ needs. Insights drawn from practical implementations of TAS have been gathered through interviews to logistic operators involved in cargo handling in two European ports (i.e. Antwerp-Brugge and Salerno). Also, the approach proposed in this study enables to define a tailored TAS solution for the port of Salerno, offering a generalized yet highly adaptable stepwise implementation strategy.
