Abstract

Hotel design and planning is widely recognized as a key factor in a company's competitiveness. Despite its importance, knowledge production in this area is limited and remains fragmented and interdisciplinary. This systematic literature review examines hotel design and planning, focusing on interdisciplinary synergies, methodologies, and the evolution of the subject areas. The research enriches existing knowledge and provides insights into the evolution of the field and emerging trends. The findings reveal diverse conceptualizations, mainly from authors with backgrounds in management and marketing, with less representation from architecture and social sciences. Overall, this research identified gaps in the interdisciplinary approach to tourism accommodation design and a lack of systematic approach to the topic. The findings show a predominance of customer-centered and economic approaches led by researchers with management and marketing backgrounds, highlighting the industry's efforts to respond to current consumer preferences. This trend, although identified as important, may be overshadowing other critical dimensions such as sustainable architectural practice. The research suggests a future research agenda that emphasizes a holistic view of hotel design and planning.
