Abstract

Around 2% of the global population suffers from dementia. Nature-related XR content can improve the quality of life for people with dementia. However, research on dementia raises many challenges around ethical implications, access to the patients and the challenge of capturing their behaviour (due to communication issues). Despite the challenges, a few studies investigated the effect of (nature-based) XR visuals and soundscapes. However, the effect of combining both on patients in advanced stages of dementia has not been investigated. This study investigated the effect of exposure to visuals and the combination of visuals and soundscapes, on the emotions and reactions of the patients. The results indicate that both influence emotion, attention, interest and interaction, but that the combination seems to yield more and longer effects. The results obtained are used to get insights into the potential effects of exposure to nature-related XR media and the observation protocol.
