Abstract

Industry 4.0 is a much thought about concept for further development of industrial production in the twenty-first century, mirroring the societal and scientific progress in production systems. The concept has been adopted by both science as well as the industrial community and functions as a paradigm for the further development of industrial production processes in the most advanced economies in the world. At the same time, though the concept is much studied and theorized about, practical implications remain scarce, not in the last place because of excessive investments required (not only financial, but also in terms of data infrastructure) to translate this concept into practice. This chapter shows a possible implementation of the Industry 4.0 standard in The Netherlands, based on the development of a blueprint for a smart factory for the production of energetic retrofitting packages. While not completely adhering to all Industry 4.0 standards, this proposed smart factory certainly has several aspects of this future production concept. The chapter describes the opportunities and challenges of implementing such a “near-Industry 4.0” innovative production concept.
