Abstract

Bioeconomy and agriculture are two interconnected areas, and each contributes to the development of the other. Agriculture is an important sector of the bioeconomy that can contribute to the economic development of a state. The process of transition to a green and circular economy is a present and future goal for the European Union (EU), particularly on the background of the highly polluting processing technologies of fossil resources. To determine the role of agriculture in the evolution of the bioeconomy in the Member States of the European Union, we have carried out an analysis of the indicators suggesting the development of the bioeconomy. The analysis relies on quantitative and qualitative methods, focused on the most relevant scientific articles in the field, and the analysis of indicators in the European Commission’s data. The indicators that configure the dynamics of bioeconomy in the European Union are the number of persons employed, added value at factor costs, and turnover. We have also calculated the apparent productivity of labor to illustrate the profitability of the bioeconomy sector and agriculture, in particular. The research highlights the significant contribution of agriculture to the dynamics of the bioeconomy in the Member States of the European Union. Agriculture also supports other economic sectors that are part of the bioeconomy. Concrete and coordinated measures by the Member States are needed to boost all factors involved in the economy based on raw materials, products, and environmentally friendly activities.
