Unemployment Among Potential Young Romanian Future Leaders

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to explain the phenomenon of unemployment among people with higher education at the regional level in Romania during 1990–2017. Young and well-educated people are the would-be Romanian leaders of tomorrow, yet instead of taking the opportunities into their hands and to shape up their future, they fall the victim of the current overloaded higher educational system and the heated labor market. We employ the empirical model in order to test our hypotheses and assumptions based on the regional analysis of the data. The analysis is centered around a vector-autoregressive model (VAR) in the panel suggests difficulties in integrating graduates on the Romanian labor market. As the number of graduates increases, the unemployment rate also increases slightly, with only a decrease in unemployment after a period, indicating that there are graduates who need a period of up to one year to integrate on the labor market. Our results might be of some relevance for the labor economist and politicians all around the European Union (especially in the so-called New Member States that joined the EU in 2004 and after) as well as within the wider economic context.
