Abstract

This chapter estimates endogenously the critical turning points and evaluates the growth performance of agriculture in 15 major states in India during 1960/1961–2006/2007. The growth rate of net domestic product from agriculture declined in many states during the post-reform period relative to the pre-reform one. The post-reform period is also characterised by a large and widening interstate variations in the growth rate of agricultural production. The estimates reveal significant structural breaks in Indian agriculture in 1967–1968 and 1988–1989. However, there are large variations in the nature and timing of structural breaks across states, and the estimated breakpoints in many states are different from those observed at the all-India level. The results provide insights for understanding the spatial characteristics of growth in Indian agriculture.
