Abstract

Respectful pluralism (Hicks, Religion and the workplace: Pluralism, spirituality, leadership. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2003) explains how a diverse country, such as the United States of America, can include all people, regardless of their differences. This chapter will illustrate the development of a new leadership theory that will respect human dignity and encourage differences, not just tolerate them. At the core of respectful pluralism, rhetoric is examined to choose words that will lift others up instead of tearing them down. This chapter will qualitatively explore the concept of such a leadership theory and identify core competencies for leader and follower development. The emerging new theory is called respectful leadership.
