Abstract

This chapter explores how universities in Uzbekistan are using community engagement and partnerships to promote sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. With the country undergoing major reforms, universities are playing a growing role in addressing both social and environmental challenges. The chapter looks at two key examples: the collaboration between universities and mahallas (traditional neighborhood councils) to support local communities, and partnerships between universities and local businesses to create sustainability-focused educational programs. To analyze these partnerships, a mixed-methods approach is used. This includes interviews with university leaders, community members, and students, as well as surveys to measure the impact of these programs on student learning and community development. Social network analysis methods are also applied to map the relationships between students, faculty, community leaders, and businesses to see how well these partnerships are working. By highlighting these case studies, the chapter shows how universities in Uzbekistan are not only contributing to sustainability but also fostering diversity and inclusion. It offers insights into how other universities can create similar initiatives that connect students with their communities and local businesses to drive meaningful change.
