Abstract

This chapter utilizes the structuration theory of social change to assess digital transformation and how it shapes social change through shifting forms of governance. The theory is effective in the examination of how human agency effects. While studies on social change exist, a gap remains on how digital transformation can be at the center of social transformation. Using in-depth reviews of secondary sources related to the topic and with a focus on Africa, this chapter explores the diagnostic potential of digital transformation as a tool for the realization of social change. This chapter contributes to the discussion on societal transformation, and it aids in understanding the issues that contribute to societal instability. This chapter found that digital technologies are increasingly being integrated into governance and management systems to define social and economic arrangements. However, it is also observed that the ensuing social reconfiguration is occurring with adverse effects and social marginalization as a result of the physical divide and the structural limitations existing in societies. This is being exacerbated by the shifting governance of social and economic organizations embedded in the platforms. This chapter concludes that technology governance has negative implications for social change and social participation.
