Abstract

The adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in 2015 stimulated research on sustainability across various sectors including tourism and hospitality. At the same time, in the following years many challenges of different nature have occurred, from regional financial crises to a global pandemic. In this chapter, we use a systematic literature review (SLR) approach to map tourism and hospitality research at the intersection of sustainability agenda and crises issues. Based on an analysis of 134 articles published from 2015 to 2024, we show that the COVID-19 pandemic has driven the rise in scholars' interest in this field. Our analysis allows us to identify five intersecting thematic clusters of literature: the impact of crises on sustainability, destination sustainability in crises, management transformation in a crisis environment, CSR in turbulent conditions, and the behavior of responsible tourists amid uncertainty. We conclude by highlighting key research gaps in the field and encourage sustainability researchers to pay greater attention to crises beyond the pandemic.
