Rural Tourism in Times of Crisis in Poland: A Demand Perspective

Abstract

Rural tourism is pivotal for sustainable development, yielding economic, social, and environmental benefits, particularly in less-urbanized areas. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent macroeconomic challenges have influenced its trajectory. This study examines experiences and expectations of rural recreation in the Mazowieckie region, Poland. Utilising a web-based questionnaire, data were collected from respondents contacted primarily via social media. Findings reveal that tourism in Mazowieckie primarily fulfils social, physical (active recreation), and cognitive needs. Respondents prioritise infrastructure for physical activities, particularly biking and hiking trails, aligning with their tourism objectives. Online channels emerged as vital sources of information for travellers. These insights shed light on the evolving landscape of rural tourism amidst pandemic-induced disruptions and underscore the significance of adaptive strategies for sustainable tourism development.
