Abstract

The Development Assistance Committee of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development gives priority to the policies of trade, environment and development cooperation, and in particular focuses on the role that aid agencies can play in promoting compatibility between these policies. In addition the committee is seeking ways to assist developing countries to use new trading opportunities at the interface of trade and the environment and overcome trade constraints that may result from increasingly stringent and complex environmental regulations. Finally the committee, and particularly its working party on development assistance and the environment, is taking steps to ensure that the findings of the many different fora working on trade and the environment are incorporated into the development cooperation strategies of donor nations and operationalised in the planning, design and implementation of aid programmes.
