The LDC Perspective

Abstract

This paper concerns the developing countries’ interests in the liberalisation of world agricultural trade. The industrial countries’ current batteries of protectionism have a number of obvious consequences for world agricultural markets, and thus for developing countries. It is hoped that the Uruguay Round will reverse the tide of protectionism, and so alleviate some of the harm done, but as I shall argue below not every ostensibly successful conclusion to the Round will be beneficial in these respects. Thus it is important for the developing countries how the industrial countries address their own problems, and the prime purpose of this paper is to identify ways in which developing countries might influence the outcome of the GATT trade talks in agriculture in the direction of mutual advantage.
