Abstract

Much of our economic thinking depends upon assumptions about how firms behave. The aim of this book is to compare the usefulness of three theoretical paradigms — neoclassical; ‘managerial-behavioural’; and ‘Schumpeterian’ — for describing the behaviour of firms in an industry which is typical of newer industries in many respects, including industrial concentration, relatively rapid technical change, international corporations and international markets. Study of the television industry during the course of its adoption of a new product technology — viewdata (also known as interactive videotex) — allowed the particular role of product technical change in such an industry to be drawn out.
