Abstract

The Japanese archipelago is formed by an arc-shaped group of volcanic islands stretching from the northeast to the southwest for a distance of nearly 2200 kilometres. It lies 200 kilometres east of the Korean peninsula and between the 31st and the 46th latitudes, north. This range in latitude produces various climatic contrasts while the position near the continent makes for more severe summers and winters than would otherwise be the case.
