Abstract

What started out to be a promising career as customer services manager at a large manufacturing company turned into a nightmare for Stephen Jackson. After six months in the job, Stephen had serious regrets because his boss, Nick, was a psychopathic bully. He would get angry, and yell and scream, and at other times he would give Stephen the silent treatment and not talk to him for days. Stephen worked nine or ten hours a day but Nick was never satisfied. Stephen had never had any poor feedback from his international customers, yet Nick often hinted ‘darkly’ that he knew of bad comments and would use these against Stephen if he had to. Steven felt utterly enraged by the allegations but felt powerless, as he had no idea how to tackle this issue. He found himself feeling ‘depressed’ about his situation, and would often get drunk with friends on weeknights, a pattern he found disturbing. There was no point in talking to Nick’s boss, Helen, as she seemed enamoured of Nick. What was Stephen to do?
