Abstract

El presenta capítulo analiza el considerable aumento de las enfermedades crónicas y degenerativas en el Perú, con especial énfasis en el caso del cáncer. Se investigan sus causas y consecuencias, y se calcula la brecha que existe entre los costos económicos de prevenir, diagnosticar y tratar el cáncer, y el presupuesto público asignado para enfrentar dicha enfermedad. Más aún, se observa cómo la brecha se va agrandando con el paso de los años, debido, principalmente, al cambio en el perfil demográfico de la población. Estos resultados ponen en evidencia la necesidad de transitar hacia un nuevo sistema de salud, con modelos distintos de atención, basados en la prevención y el diagnóstico precoz (OMS 2005). El estudio también estima los beneficios económicos de la prevención y el diagnóstico precoz en relación con los costos de tratar el cáncer.
