Basic concepts for transition mapping: institutions

Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss the concept of institution. Institutions, that is the norms and rules that structure political, economic and social interaction, are essential in governance because they are the tools of coordination between actors in governance, and, after enacting them, for coordination in the community at large. We discuss different types of institutions, sites and arenas for decision-making, and the relation between formal and informal institutions. We then introduce the concept of actor-institution configurations. These configurations are the result of the co-evolution of actors and institutions and a cornerstone of Evolutionary Governance Theory (EGT). We will need to understand those configurations in order to discern which options for strategy might exist in a community.
