Enhancing personal autonomy

Abstract

Both liberal and social democratic regimes aim to promote personal autonomy; liberals for libertarian (freedom to choose) reasons, and social democrats in order to reduce dependence on the capitalist market. Our proxy measures of personal autonomy are based on the idea that autonomy requires having an adequate income and a reasonable amount of leisure (discretionary) time. Results from both time use diaries and surveys indicate that the resources required for autonomy are more widely held in social democratic regimes than other regimes. Liberal regimes perform poorly, largely because people work longer hours, and hence have less leisure than in other regimes.
