Abstract

The question of why longevity is greater in some neighborhoods than in others, and what it means to say that your health is determined by the neighborhood in which you live, are essential questions about neighborhoods and health. In this chapter I review what we know about the specific effects of living in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The work which focuses on holistic neighborhood contributions to health outcomes, green space, parks, and opportunities for walking, rather than characteristics that can be linked to specific individual outcomes, may in the long run be the most valuable contribution of the neighborhood effects discussion.
