Exploring country rankings

Abstract

This chapter sets out the approach taken for the research in this monograph. A rationale for the choice of countries used in the analysis is provided, especially as since 1990, the first year the Human Development (HDI) rankings were published, there have been many changes to the map of the world; some countries have split while others no longer exist. This is followed by a rationale and explanation of the use of ‘adjusted ranks’ over time for the countries in the sample. The chapter briefly summarises the statistical techniques (i.e. correction and regression) employed for the analyses of the adjusted ranks and how they may be influenced by changes in index methodology, and also how media reporting of the indices may be influenced by country ranks.
