Promoting inclusivity in Principles of Microeconomics

Abstract

With its focus on individual choices and trade-offs, and with potential for application to myriad public policy issues, the Principles of Microeconomics course can be integral for inviting students from a range of backgrounds into Economics. However, the way it is taught in many institutions can instead turn students away from the discipline. Ensuring that it actually is inviting may require many economics instructors to re-imagine what and how they have been teaching in this foundational course. This chapter provides strategies to build inclusive Micro Principles classrooms, focusing specifically on three pillars of inclusive teaching: being self-reflective, being identity-conscious, and being relational.
