    La presente etude porte sur les determinants de l'echec des nouvelles entreprises canadiennes. On y examine l'incidence de certains facteurs sur la probabilite de survie - facteurs lies a la structure du secteur d'activite, au profil demographique des entreprises et aux cycles macro-economiques. On verifie si les determinants de l'echec sont les memes pour les jeunes entreprises et celles ayant atteint l'adolescence, et si l'ampleur de ces differences a une portee economique. On examine enfin si, apres avoir neutralise certaines influences, les taux d'echec varient entre les secteurs et entre les provinces. L'analyse touche a deux themes principaux. L'incidence d'abord qu'exercent certaines caracteristiques du secteur - par exemple la taille moyenne des entreprises et la concentration - sur le processus d'entree et de sortie, que ce soit par leur effet sur les couts lies a l'echec ou sur l'intensite de la concurrence. Le deuxieme theme a trait a la facon dont les dimensions de l'echec changent a mesure que les nouvelles entreprises s'aguerrissent aux particularites du marche.
