Abstract

***** This book offers an intermediate-level introduction to the formal analysis of monetary policy. It is intended for undergraduate students in economics who have completed basic coursework in macroeconomics, microeconomics, calculus, and statistics, and who wish to deepen their understanding of monetary policy's theoretical and operational foundations. The book begins by exploring the framework and goals of monetary policy in Colombia, followed by an analysis of money supply through the interbank market and open market operations. Subsequent chapters trace the evolution of the demand for money through various economic schools of thought and introduce formal models including Money-in-the-Utility-Function (MIU), the Lucas model with imperfect information, the Taylor model with price rigidities, and finally, a simplified version of the New Keynesian model. The book also describes the problem of dynamic inconsistency in monetary policymaking and includes an appendix on solving models with rational expectations. Designed to fill a gap between introductory macroeconomics and advanced graduate-level texts, the book provides an accessible yet rigorous treatment of key concepts in monetary theory and policy.
