Abstract

Phytochemical, vitamins, Proximate, antioxidant and mineral compositions of Ficus capensis fruit were determined using standard methods. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, phenol, and saponin. The proximate analysis of the fruits of Ficus capensis yielded: moisture (17.24%), ash (5.52%), crude protein (5.01%), crude fat (8.11%), crude fiber (9.07%), total carbohydrate (55.03%) and energy calorific value (313.15Kcal/100g).The mineral content showed the presence of zinc, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and iron content. This indicates the tendency of Ficus capensis to be able to control osmotic balance, essential for bone formation, lower blood pressure and also act a source of antioxidant vitamins and minerals. The result also showed that the fruits contain a variety of vitamins (A, B-complex, C , E, D, K and carotenoid) with β-carotenoid (6.55±0.009%) having the highest concentration and Vitamin A (6.06 ± 0.004) while the B –Vitamins and Vitamin E are in moderate amount. The in vitro antioxidant assay revealed varied degrees of antioxidant activity of the fruit. The diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity was significantly high (p
