Effects Of Different Packaging Materials On Shelf Life And Quality Parameters Of Strawberry (Fragaria X Ananassa Duch.) In Kirtipur, Nepal

Abstract

Shelf life is a critical quality criterion for strawberries. Despite their short post-harvest life, the demand for strawberries is increasing due to their sweet and sour taste and nutritional benefits. Packaging materials play a crucial role in extending the shelf life of strawberries to meet consumer preferences. An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Development Research and Training Centre in Kirtipur to evaluate the effects of different packaging materials on the shelf life and quality of strawberries, aiming to identify the optimal packaging materials. The strawberry variety used in the experiment was Florida Beauty, and seven different types of packaging materials were tested: perforated punnet, non-perforated punnet, plastic box, perforated polythene, non-perforated polythene, perforated low-density polythene, and non-perforated low-density polythene. The treatments were arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. The strawberries were harvested early in the morning to minimize evaporation loss, and initial data were collected for each parameter before packaging them under different materials. Data on physical quality parameters (physiological loss in weight, decay percentage, and firmness) and biochemical quality parameters (total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid, and organoleptic test) were collected on alternate days. Among the tested materials, non-perforated low-density polythene (50 microns) demonstrated superior effectiveness in preserving the shelf life and quality (weight, decay, TSS, firmness, and vitamin C) of strawberries compared to other packaging materials. This effectiveness is attributed to the moisture barrier, temperature resistance, and chemical inertness properties of low-density polythene. In conclusion, non-perforated low-density polythene was found to be highly effective in extending the shelf life and maintaining the quality of strawberries, making it the recommended packaging material for this purpose.
