Abstract

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) is an important food and oil crop grown during the rainy season in Nepal. In the context of Nepal, there are no high-yielding varieties as in other countries India and China. Finding the right genotype with high performance can reach a production breakthrough. Seven groundnut genotypes (Janak, Jyoti, Jayanti, B-4, Rajashri, Baidehi, and Samriddhi) were composed and an experiment was conducted in 2022 at the Gokuleshwor Agriculture and Animal Science College, Baitadi, Nepal. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) in three replications. Germination Percentage, number of leaves, plant height, leaf area index, pod number, pod weight per plant,100 seed weight, shelling percentage, and pod yield per hectare characteristics of varieties were investigated. The combined analysis of variance results showed significant variations observed among the tested varieties for all the studied traits. Germination percentage, number of leaves, and plant height were found to be significantly affected by the different varieties i.e., maximum in Janak which is statistically at par with B-4, Baidehi, and minimum in Rajashree which is statistically at par with Jayanti. In terms of yield and yield component,Samriddhi (54.85gm) recorded significantly higher pod weight and lowest in Janak(43.59gm). Similarly, the highest shelling percentage was observed in Jayanti (48.88%) and the lowest in Janak (34.22%). The test weight and yield were found to be significant i.e., maximum in Janak and minimum t in Jayanti. Generally, the effect of varieties on grain yield was significant and the best-performing varieties namely Janak can be recommended for groundnut production at Gokuleshwor, Baitadi. However, this experiment is a preliminary study, it is essential to replicate the experiment in different locations and seasons to ensure the reliability of these findings.
