Abstract

The litchi fruit borer (LFB), Conopomorpha sinensis Bradley (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) is the severe pest of lychee in Bangladesh. The eco-friendly and readily available botanicals are often recommended to control LFB. Solo and combined applications of botanicals were studied to lower LFB infestations. All the treatments [neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract, bishkatali (Persicaria hydropiper) leaf extract, neem oil, karanza (Pongamia pinnata) oil, neem leaf extract+bishkatali leaf extract and neem oil+karanza oil] were effective in reducing LFB infestations compared to control trees (58.64%). The lowest fruit infestations were in neem leaf extracts (10.66%) followed by bishkatali leaf extract, neem oil, neem leaf extract+bishkatali leaf extract and neem oil+karanza oil. Infestation for karanza oil was lower than the neem leaf extracts but not significantly different to the other treatments. The higher number of marketable fruits (ca.>158 thousand/acre) and benefit-cost ratio (10.99:1) was found for neem leaf extracts. Therefore, neem leaf extract followed by bishkatali leaf extract, neem oil, neem leaf extract+bishkatali leaf extract and neem oil+karanza oil can be recommended to apply. Karanza oil can also be advised to keep LFB infestations lower.
