Technologischer Optimismus reicht nicht: Lehren aus dem internationalen Kampf gegen die Cholera im 19. Jahrhundert

Abstract

Warum war der Suezkanal eine wichtige Verteidigungslinie gegen das Voranschreiten der Cholera im 19. Jahrhundert? In der historischen Betrachtung zeigt sich, dass das nicht nur mit epidemiologischen Erwägungen zu tun hatte, sondern auch mit kolonialen Konkurrenzen zwischen den europäischen Staaten. Der Ökonom und Politikwissenschaftler Luis Aue analysiert die Beschlüsse der internationalen Sanitärkonferenz von Venedig im Jahr 1892, ein Meilenstein auf dem Weg zu einer global abgestimmten Gesundheitspolitik. Aus damaligen Fehlern lassen sich heute noch Schlüsse für eine effektive globale Gesundheitspolitik ziehen.
