Association between Nongroup Health Insurance and Health Outcomes

Abstract

This paper describes the association between having nongroup health insurance coverage and health, health behavior, and health utilization of married couples in the United States. Using the spouses’ insurance status as the instrumental variable while focusing on the nongroup health insurance market, I find that health insurance is associated with improved health, increased healthcare utilization, and improved health behavior. This impact is especially apparent for females, individuals with chronic conditions, and privately insured individuals. I also find that partial-year enrollment, or an uninsurance spell, is associated with worse health and mental health and increased emergency department visits and hospital admissions. The results are significant for both individuals with long uninsurance spells and short uninsurance spells.
