Measuring Nutrition Security Using the Consumer Food Data System Datasets

Abstract

Nutrition security is an emerging concept lacking a consensus definition, conceptualization, or standardized measure. This perspectives manuscript synthesizes findings from two previously published analyses to assess the feasibility of using available measures of key dimensions of nutrition security from two Consumer Food Data System (CFDS) datasets: the 2012–2013 National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS) and the 2007–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey/Flexible Consumer Behavior Survey (NHANES/FCBS), in deriving a measure of nutrition security aligned with the U. S. Department of Agriculture's definition. This study highlights methodological considerations, strengths and limitations of the two datasets for developing nutrition security metrics, and informs future research on standardized measurement for national nutrition monitoring.
