Was erwartet Österreich in der Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion der EG?

Abstract

Als Abschluß des wirtschaftlichen Integrationsprozesses will die EG die Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion schaffen. Zur Zeit erfüllen erst wenige EG-Länder die im Vertrag von Maastricht für die Teilnahme an der Währungsunion mit einer Einheitswährung notwendigen Konvergenzkriterien. Die Vorteile einer Einheitswährung reichen von einer Verringerung der Transaktionskosten bis zu risikoloseren Investitionsmöglichkeiten und daher mehr Wirtschaftswachstum. Die Aufgabe währungs- und geldpolitischer Autonomie sowie die Ungewißheit, ob eine Einheitswährung weniger wirtschaftliche Stabilität bringt als die bisherige Situation (ein von Deutschland dominiertes EWS) müssen zu den Nachteilen gerechnet werden. Österreich wäre als eines der wenigen Länder Europas schon heute für die Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion qualifiziert.
