Abstract

The rise in energy prices in 2021/22 put the competitiveness of Austrian manufacturing industry to the test. Model-based simulations and an enterprise survey were carried out to analyze the medium-term effects of high energy prices. The results show that the cost disadvantages in international competition induced by energy price increases will lead to a decline in industrial production and employment in the medium term and increase the risk of relocation of energy-intensive production.
