Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises are seen as one of the "leading forces" of modern economies, thanks to their contribution to technological upgrading, product and process innovation, job creation and export development. Given the fact that Europe is increasingly becoming a knowledge-based economy, it is critical to better understand the role of small and medium-sized enterprises in this knowledge economy: how knowledge intensity, research and development and innovation can affect the productivity and overall capacity of the regional business.
