Abstract

The present study explores the essence of hybrid automotive technology, the state of the automotive market in Europe, and the future development of hybrid and electric cars that unambiguously determine the onset of the electric era in vehicle propulsion. The article aims to reveal some of the advantages and disadvantages of hybrid cars, their classification, as well as some of the factors for their mass introduction into the product lines of the world producers and their consumer demand. The review of European passenger car sales / registrations shows not only the substantial development of the market segments of the new transport technologies but also the problems that have come from the financial and economic crisis affecting the world since 2008. An overview has been made of the proven cases of unfair automotive market practices and misleading information in its segments, and action plans to curb global climate change caused by the automotive sector. Opportunities outlined for the developments of automotive technologies provide the real basis for improving energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint of the automotive sector over global climate change.
