Abstract

The report is focusing on the development of banking models and the structure of the banking systems in the years before and after the global financial crisis of 2007-8. Firstly, analysis of the role of the banking institutions for the emerging, and consequent development of the crisis, has been carried out. Based on this is an evidence supported forecast for a logical assumption for the decrease (but not dying out) of the role of the modern (investment) banking, as well as the increase in the significance of the traditional commercial banking, in the short and medium-term perspective. These forecasts are considered to be applicable on the level of particular bank institutions, while on the level of the entire banking system, a degree of convergence of the banking systems of certain countries can be expected.
