[Conceptual foundations of the gravity model of trade: A literature review]

Abstract

The paper reviews the state of art of literature on the gravity model of trade, throughout its practical exploitation and its microfoundations. The conceptual contributions in this field have made it possible to derive the gravity equation from different types of general equilibrium models; also, by assuming different market structures and finally when several degrees of heterogeneity between firms are taken into account. The applied literature on the field shows the existence of a prolific discussion referring to the impact of geographical distance on trade, which has become of particular interest in the current context of globalization
