Three-Step Structured Instructional Model for Enhancing Primary School Students’ Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills

Abstract

This study in Chengdu, China, focused on third—grade primary school students to improve their mathematical problem—solving skills. A mixed—methods approach was adopted, starting with a survey of 192 students. The survey showed that students often struggled with knowing where to begin when solving mathematical problems. To address this, a three—step structured instructional model (Reading and Comprehension, Analysis and Solution, Review and Reflection) was developed. A 50—student quasi—experiment was conducted. The experimental group using this model had a remarkable improvement in mathematical problem—solving skills compared to the control group with conventional teaching. This suggests the model can effectively enhance students’ mathematical problem—solving skills and has potential for integration into elementary mathematical curricula.
