Abstract

This paper was written to mark 25 years of the ESRC Urban and Regional Economics Workshop which began in 1976. The intellectual development of urban economics is traced from its early roots in the writings of Smith and Marshall through to Krugman's economic geography. Institutional developments are also considered with journal development and expansion reflecting the increasing maturity and internationalization of the discipline. The paper concludes with an assessment of the impact of urban economics on private and public sector property professionals in the UK. E VANS A. W. On esquisse le de veloppement intellectuel de l'economie urbaine depuis ses origines, des les oeuvres de Smith et Marshall jusqu'a la geographie economique de Krugman. On considere aussi les developpements institutionnels, dont le developpement et l'expansion des revues, ce qui reflete la maturite et l'internationalisation croissantes de la discipline. En guise de conclusion, l'article fait le bilan de l' impact de l'economie urbaine sur les professionnels des marches de l'immobilier public et prive au Royaume-Uni. E VANS A. W. Jahrestag der Grundung der ESCR Arbeitsgruppe fu r Stadt-und Regionalwirtschaftswissenschaft im Jahre 1976. Die akademische Entwicklungsgeschichte der stadtischen Wirtschaftswissenschaft wird von ihren ersten Anfangen in den Schriften von Smith und Marshall bis zu Krugmans Wirtschaftsgeographie aufgezeichnet. Zugleich werden auch institutionelle Entwicklungen beachtet, die Entwicklung und Erweiterung von Zeitschriften, zunehmende Reife und Internationalisierung des Fachgebiets widerspiegeln. Der Aufsatz schliesst mit einer Beurteilung der Auswirkung der stadtischen Wirtschaftswissenschaft auf Immobilienfachleute des privaten und des o ffentlichen Sektors im UK.
