Job Mobility, Patent Ownership and Knowledge Diffusion: Evidence on a Sample of Italian Inventors

Abstract

On the basis of the original data on the curricula vitae of a group of Italian inventors patenting in the pharmaceutical field, this paper distinguishes between inventors' employers and applicants, and provides new information on their professional careers and their patent ownership regimes, that is whether or not intellectual property rights on inventions are retained by their employers. In addition, the paper confirms that inventors' mobility is an important determinant of knowledge impact and, interestingly, shows that ownership, too, is associated with a greater potential for knowledge diffusion.
