Migration of high school graduates for higher education: the role of degree type and field of study

Abstract

This paper examines the intra- and inter-regional migration choices of Chilean students pursuing higher education from 2011 to 2017. Using a gravity model, it explores the role of geography, type of institution, and field of study in shaping students' location and program decisions. The estimates reveal notable differences: vocational programs mainly attract local and neighboring students, while institutions offering bachelor's and professional degrees draw students from more distant regions. Additionally, we find considerable heterogeneity in effects by fields of study, which demonstrates substantial variation in this dimension. Our findings highlight regional polarization in educational resources, with the capital region disproportionately attracting students from other areas.
