The regional dynamics of multilingual publishing in web of science: A statistical analysis of central and eastern european journals and researchers in linguistics

Abstract

This article explores multilingual publishing by analyzing the journals in the language and linguistics established in the last seven decades in CEE countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Romania, Poland, and Slovakia) and currently indexed in Web of Science. Compared with other academic semi-peripheries like Latin America and Asia, where local languages competing with English are reduced in number, academic publishing in a variety of national, regional, and global languages is a widespread and still understudied phenomenon in CEE. This aspect affects the integration of local journals and authors in the international research space. Applying logistic regression and mixed effects models in R software, we determined the following results on publication and citation patterns: 1) the CEE research output in the field of linguistics favors multilingual publication patterns, especially at the journal level (multi-language journals), and less at the level of the researchers; 2) the citation rate is affected by a cumulus of factors including the language of publication, the number of authors of an article, the journal tenure, and the number of years since the journal was indexed in WoS; 3) in the following years, the scientific production in CEE linguistics journals will increase slightly from one year to the next, while the number of citations will remain constant. Our results show that, although the publishing patterns of CEE WoS-indexed journals in the field of language and linguistics are international, multilingual publishing in languages other than English ensures the continuity of local research traditions.
